For athletes competing in the USAW meet on Saturday, Thursday and Friday need to be rest days. Amanda can around to meet with anyone to go over weights and answer questions, just let her know.

Why do you do it?

Every once in a while it’s good to have a mental check and a shift in your mentality if you need to. As my wife Sarah and I have talked about me competing this next year or not and her supporting me in either direction I go, I’ve decided to have a different approach. First I had to ask myself why I would want to compete.
A friend of mine that played in the NBA sat down with me an encouraged me to think about this. Do I want to compete because I love to, or because I feel like I have to prove something or walk away on a better note? I think there is a right and wrong reason to go again. It was a good reality check for me and I had to shift my way of thinking.
Now I want to compete because I love to. Why did I start CrossFit? I love working hard and using my body in an athletic setting. It’s a way for me to give back the gifts I’ve been given. That’s the focus now. I do it because I love it. I’m still going to be a husband, a dad, and try to be more present when I’m out of the gym. Not consumed by the previous performance, or what I will have to do tomorrow.
Here are a couple of things that have really helped me out that I have thought of on my own as well as had some of my friends tell me.
1. I do it because I truly love it and it’s fun. I want to compete for those reasons.
2. Every day I walk out of the gym I will take away a win. Jason Khalipa and I talked a few months ago at a seminar and he brought this up. Such a GREAT way to think. There is no failure that day. Even if things didn’t go quite the way as you planned, you still have a win SOMEWHERE. Maybe it was a certain amount of unbroken double unders, the way you approached the WOD mentally, or even a small portion of the workout that went better than last time. Always stay positive.
3. What do you have at the end of the day? I’ve been blessed with an amazing family. My wife is incredibly supportive in so many ways, my kids are awesome and help put things in perspective, and I have a great community of friends in the gym and around me at work on the weekends. My result in any competition doesn’t change these things.
Since thinking like this I’ve had a few things happen.
- I’m having more fun again in my workouts and getting back to what it was like when I first started. Doing it for the love of it.
- Because of this it has taken a huge amount of pressure off of me and I feel better both in and out of the gym.
- My fitness is improving. Less pressure = better performance. It’s the way it’s always worked for me. It doesn’t mean we don’t take it seriously or train hard but we can still keep perspective.
Take a look at how you view your day, your priorities, what matters to you, what defines you. Make sure those things are in the right order. When they are you will be much better because of it!
