Amanda's Story

IMG_6400 Amanda has lost over 20 lbs. (she observed that is a weight vest when we have to wear them for workouts, and she did NOT want to put that BACK on!) by paying more attention to what she eats, changing her eating habits, being strict most of the time with some cheat days and off times.  She has increased with stellar gains in her performance in both met-con and weightlifting.  Here she tells us her story and shares parts of her food journal with us.  I have been incredibly inspired by her commitment and the results she has had due to her focus and willingness to really dig into this and learn about food...and herself.

Amanda, thank you for sharing this with us!

I started CrossFit almost 3 years ago. I’ve always been athletic, and enjoyed working out…but CrossFit gives a new definition to being FIT. Two years into CrossFit, I got stronger; met-con got a little better…but not much overall change in two years. I went to the 2009 CrossFit games last July and that’s when my actually journey of becoming FIT begun. I came back extremely motivated to get in shape and change my ways. I’ve always loved to workout and lift weights, but I never completely bought into the diet aspect of fitness. So, I decided to give strict Paleo/Zone a try. I eased into it for the first couple weeks and then I was completely strict with a cheat day once a week. Cheat day is a must have if you want to be successful, just FYI…and having a companion/friend/significant other who is also eating Paleo/Zone helps a ton!

Approximately 1-2 months after the change in lifestyle I was seeing huge improvements; I was setting new met-con PR’s, one rep max PR’s and of course I was looking better (which looking good is what it’s all about.J) Not only did I see change in fitness, but also my mental well-being, I’m a happier person and I’m much different than I was back in July. This was a lifestyle change for me; I will never truly go back to my old ways…of course I will have days, weeks, even months where I will not be 100% strict. I have also added a few of my journal entries below if you wish to read…I do feel Journaling is a great way to put things in perspective when you’re first starting. The entries below just give you an idea of what my days/weeks were like for the first few weeks into the lifestyle change…

Now…I took a month or two off of being completely strict on the diet, holidays were a little tough. I’m back on track and in training mode as of January 4th. Didn’t gain any weight back, but did lose a little something in the met-con area.

July 12th, 2009

Where do begin: I’ve been working out at CrossFit for about 2.5 years off and on. Schedule gets crazy busy or I just need a break from working out. At one point in the 2.5 years I was starting to look a lot leaner, but then I took like 3 months off lost everything and gained back a ton of weight. Just recently I decided to go back to CrossFit and give it my all. Participated in the CrossFit Regional’s competition and felt I did not do well…My solution; take another month and half off of CrossFit. What the hell was I thinking! Came back to CrossFit in June and told myself I needed to completely commit. So, June went well with the workouts, but I wasn’t quite where I needed/wanted to be. So, my actual journey of becoming FIT and eating correctly started after the 2009 CrossFit games.

July 10th weekend: Aromas, California (CrossFit Games)

-       Wow, these people are extremely fit. Everywhere you look people wearing little clothing with rock hard bodies. Competed in the team event, did decent. We took 40th overall. The next few days sat around and watched the individual competitions; these girls/guys are absolutely amazing and extremely fit. Thinking to myself the whole time, could I ever compete with them….good question? Being in Aromas that weekend gave me extreme motivation to hit the gym hard and to eat right. The break-up with a crazy jerk ass boyfriend always helps too. J

 July 13th Monday: (178 lbs)

-       Back to reality: work, working out, crazy ex-boyfriend and new life-style change. The Zone diet and then to Paleo/Zone when I’m ready. Hitting it hard in the gym will be a must…I can do this.

Week 1, 13th-17th:

-       Week one went ok, had two sodas and two pieces of chocolate. Other then that I was completely Zone, with no snacks. So, approximate 9-10 blocks per day. Felt well with the workouts this week, legs hate me after the 135lb front squat workout.

As of Friday the 17th: I’m completely Paleo/Zone. No more dairy for me, ugh… L

-       Wasn’t sure about completely giving up dairy, but took advice from a great friend who said “cut the dairy and you will see major changes in the mid-section.” You will start to drop lbs.

Week 2, 18th-24th:

Cheat Day, Sunday the 19th:

-       I had three Zone/Paleo 3 block meals. I bought a Butterfinger large blizzard and I was super excited about it. Only able to eat about ¼ of the blizzard and I was done with it. I also had 6oz of Dr. Pepper. So, not much of a cheat day. L

-       Diet went well this week, hit it hard. All I drank was water this week and still completely Paleo/Zone. Workouts did not go well; I feel extremely weak and getting frustrated. What the hell is wrong with me, just keep going don’t stop because you’re tired. Self-esteem is getting better, looking leaner and clothes getting baggier. But do I really have to lose the girls, I’m all about getting leaner/stronger but losing the C cups will be hard. L ugh… LOL

Week 3, 25th – 31st:    (170lbs - Monday)

Weekend:

-       Didn’t eat much, maybe one meal a day. Did have a couple marg’s on Friday night. Weekends will be tough to stay with the diet, but I will do my best. Fasted for 24 hours, didn’t mean to just kind of happened.

Monday: Had a red bull sugar free with lunch, other then that diet went well. Workout: WTF, I’m so done. Why do people always have an excuse….ugh. Self-esteem not good, looked in the mirror and realized I still have a long ways to go. WTF is wrong with me, I’ve lost 8 lbs in two weeks and last week I felt great about myself and now I feel terrible. Oh, well….it will get better.

Tuesday: Diet went well, workout: went well…burpees

Wednesday: Went to a wine tasting event with the girls, L  Had fun, but drank to many carbs. Had one piece of chocolate and a few pieces of cheese with my wine. Cindy was the workout today had a PR of 12 rounds, but too be honest I might have missed a few push-up reps. I lose count often, and me and push-ups don’t agree. But, I will say I get the full-range of motion with each push-up. They just take me forever to complete. I’m in need of a major cheat/binge day. Yes I could consider Wednesday a cheat day with the wine I drank, but I still ate breakfast/lunch perfect zone/paleo. Just had a too many carbs at dinner. Well, that’s my story and I’m stickin with it. I also got on the scale again today, which I know is bad….165lbs. Yes, probably a lot of water weight.

Thursday: Woke up not feeling very good at all, probably the wine and cheese. I feel just kinda blah. Felt like I just took 10 steps backward in my diet… L    After the workout, we decided to have ice cream….it was good.

Week 4: (Aug 1-7th)

            Saturday: Cheat day:

-       French toast, chocolate, string cheese, pepsi, red vines, fruit, sausage, Bud light. And that was all I ate/drank.

Wednesday: Not a good day, major break-down with the sugar… Just one of those weeks. Women understand this week more then males. Usually it’s a lot worse; I know I’m trying to justify my sugar intake this week…no excuses I should just not be eating the chocolate/sugar.  Ugh……..WTF  Did have a pretty good workout today and two softball games. I feel like I’ve gained all the weight back I LOST last week. Trying not to step on a scale until this week is OVER.

Thursday: Feel like crap today, haven’t been sleeping well and my body is tired.

- Let’s just say the diet did not go well again today, lots of chocolate….aauugghh

Friday:  Have to say this has not been a good week, eating sugar like crazy major breakdown. It’s funny, because I thought this would be a good week if you look at my Monday entry, but it hasn’t. The only good thing this week brought was I hit the gym everyday and ran three times this week. It happens…can’t freak out about it

Week 5 (158lbs)  (Aug 8th – 14th)

Saturday:  Glad that week is over….  Need a rest day, but decided to take one on Sunday. Not sure what I ate, forgot to write it down. But I’m sure it wasn’t good and I drank Saturday night…L  Drinking not good for diet, but good for mentalness at the moment. No that’s not a word…but I decided that’s what I wanted to say.

Thursday:  Hang Power Clean 65k, it was nice!!  Super tired again this week, really need to figure out my sleeping issue. Not sleeping well at all…ugh      I’m getting stronger, not sure if it’s because of the diet or is it’s mental. Probably a combination of both. I’ve PR’d on back squat, clean, power clean, and some of my met-con workouts. My strength pr’s have been huge:   back squat 90k to 97k (could of done more, just was fatigued I started to light)  Hang Power Clean: not sure my previous PR, but I got 65k today and my squat clean in 62k…um what’s wrong with that picture….! I can hang clean more then I can from the ground. Something is wrong with my dead lift…I could barely get 105k in my dead lift, but I’m back squatting 97k…interesting. Well, I don’t know! But I’m going to get some one on one attention and work on my dead lift and my clean from the ground…I’ll have to see if we can fix it.
